Visited Jantar Mantar in Delhi on 2018 . The shapes look abstract and almost surreal at first glance. But once you realize these are actually 18th-century astronomical instruments built by Sawai Jai Singh II, it becomes even more fascinating. It’s amazing how science was expressed through such bold architectural forms ancient times. Jantar Mantar in Delhi is a fascinating destination for architecture and history enthusiasts. I visited this remarkable site with one of my South Korean friends, and we were both captivated by the unique blend of science, art, and architecture. Built in 1724 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the observatory was designed to study celestial movements and time, and it remains a testament to India’s advanced astronomical knowledge of that era. The instruments, though smaller than those at Jaipur, are still impressive. The Samrat Yantra, a large sundial, along with other geometric structures, showcases incredible precision and design. Walking around the complex, you can clearly see how functional these structures were for observing the sun, stars, and planets. The layout is open and easy to explore, making it enjoyable to spend time observing each instrument, reading the information boards, and taking photos. Visiting with a friend added to the fun, as we compared notes, marveled at the architecture, and soaked in the history of the place. Jantar Mantar in Delhi is a fascinating historical observatory that showcases the brilliance of Indian astronomy. Built by Maharaja Jai Singh II in the 18th century, it features massive instruments used for measuring time and celestial movements. The architecture is unique, and the precision of the instruments is impressive even today. It’s a must-visit for history and science enthusiasts. The place is well-maintained, though visiting in cooler months is recommended due to Delhi’s heat. A great spot to explore and learn! A must visit place in Delhi. Its good to look if you are interested in knowing more about science and architecture. Well built and maintained. Tickets can be booked both online and offline. The ticket charge is INR 25 for adults. Good for photography. It was less crowded during our visit. Total time required : 1 to 2 hours. Washroom and drinking water facility available. Jantar Mantar Delhi is the first such observatory built by Maharaja Jai Singh the second in eighteenth century. After this, he built four more in various other cities including Jaipur. The place is now defunct as an observatory but maintained for the historical heritage. For Indians, ticket is twenty rupees and order to book online. The site is often used tor protests so that can lead to noise and disruptions around. But entry was seamless. Visited on Weekday Wait time No wait Reservation recommended Yes
