I am extremely disappointed with the way I was treated by Dr. Atul Taparia at Bombay Hospital, Indore. A family member of ours is admitted in the hospital, and naturally, we wanted to understand their condition, treatment and progress. However, the reports were not properly shown or explained to us, and we were also not given clear information about the medicines and treatment being given to the patient. We requested a case summary so that we could at least understand what tests had been done, what findings were observed, and what treatment had been provided. However, the case summary given to us was incomplete and did not contain the relevant details we were looking for. When I politely approached Dr. Atul Taparia and requested him to help us with the case summary and clarify these details, instead of explaining the hospital policy politely, he became extremely rude and disrespectful. He repeatedly questioned my knowledge and capabilities and asked whether I was a doctor. He spoke in a very condescending manner, as if a patient's family member has no right to ask questions or seek an understanding of the patient's condition unless they are a doctor. What was most shocking was the attitude that “mere jitna experience kisi ka nahi hai” and that everyone else was “gadha.” His experience as a doctor is certainly respectable, but experience and designation do not justify disrespecting or humiliating a patient's family member. I was not questioning his medical expertise. I was simply trying to understand the patient's condition, the tests that had been performed, their findings, and the treatment progress. If there is a hospital policy regarding reports, medicines or case summaries, it can be explained respectfully. There was absolutely no need for such personal remarks or disrespectful behaviour. As a family member, I believe we should be able to ask genuine questions about a patient's condition and seek clarity or a second medical opinion without being made to feel ignorant or unwelcome. I am writing this review not because I disagree with a medical decision, but because of the extremely disrespectful and unprofessional way I was spoken to. Patients and their families are already going through a stressful situation and deserve empathy, respect and clear communication.
